A little curiosity about Yin

What is Yin Yoga?

If you've never tried Yin, it's quite different from the yoga many people imagine. Instead of moving quickly from one pose to the next, we slow right down. We usually stay in each pose for several minutes, letting the muscles relax so we can work more deeply with the joints, fascia and connective tissue.

It's sometimes described as yoga for the joints, and it can be a lovely practice if you feel stiff, have lost some mobility or simply feel your body needs a little more care.

Yin is rooted in Taoist philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and the theory of the Five Elements. Neither yin nor yang is superior: they complement each other, like two sides of the same coin. If your life is full of yang energy, maybe you need a little more yin to find your balance again.

Over these six weeks we'll also explore the shift from autumn to winter: a time to turn inwards, conserve our energy and let go of what we no longer need.

What each session looks like

75 minutes in three parts

1 · Qi Gong

We begin with a little Qi Gong: gentle movement to wake up the body and arrive in the practice.

2 · Yin

Then come the quiet, long-held Yin poses, several minutes each, supported by bolsters and blankets.

3 · Yoga Nidra

We finish with a deeply relaxing Yoga Nidra, by candlelight, to close the week.

Hi, I'm Sarah, a mum of two and former education consultant who became a yoga teacher. In 2012, while travelling through Latin America, I discovered in yoga an antidote to the stress and burnout so common in modern life.

I qualified as a yoga teacher in 2013 and went on to complete advanced training in Mysore, India, where I studied the Iyengar and Ashtanga styles, specialising in alignment and adjustment, and learned Thai massage to deepen my anatomical knowledge. Back in the UK, I trained as a Mums and Babies yoga teacher and later qualified in Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga, Yoga for Toddlers and Family Yoga. In 2021 I trained in Yin Yoga with Bernie Clark and Sarah Powers.

I structure my sessions around the principles of Vinyasa and Hatha, although I specialise in yoga for women at every stage of life.
